I wrote this haiku upon returning to Canada after 5 years of living in Israel’s Negev Desert. The juxtaposition sets blossoms in contrast to wasteland. There is also a juxtaposition of emotions linked to the respective images. The imagery means to engage the reader via sensation (the desert) and fragrance (the blossoms), as well as visually. The kireji after L1 only becomes apparent after reading the whole ku. Until then, the ku might appear to say that the desert is returning, which is fine. Perhaps L2 serves as a hinge. The verse is pared down to the point where (hopefully) it can be meaningful to the reader, without restriction to…
