Dear readers, we are trying to bring you here a multiplicity of voices and styles and it's really rewarding when you appreciate and engage actively with the poems featured. Amoolya, Lakshmi, Mona; thank you all. Here's the backstory by Kelly Moyer which you've been waiting for. This is as interesting as the poem itself.
"The poem came to me as my husband and I were walking hand-in-hand to our local coffeeshop. We passed a remarkable stand of bamboo. I asked him how bamboo could grow in North Carolina as I always think of it being Japanese. He replied, “It’s an invasive species. You can’t get rid of it.” I chuckled to myself, recalling how I came here two years ago…
Bamboo is not native to Carolina with its humid subtropical climate. However, bamboo is a popular choice among gardeners and landscapers for a variety of purposes. Though bamboo grows easily in the climate mentioned above, there are some challenges that need to be tackled with, like frost damage or very cold temperatures in winters, droughts and summers when water may be scarce, dense and clay-like soil present in most parts of the state, pests and diseases of the region like mites, aphids, root rot or powdery mildew and laws and regulations pertaining to the state where potentially invasive species are prohibited from being cultivated.
Hence the dwelling of the poet on its impermanance, I suppose.
It was interesting to read…
Nice!! Carolina bamboo? Is it a temporary one?? Hope the poet reveals what made her to write this.
Interesting ku! A modern take.
