This is what the poet says about the poem:


This was my first published haiku. I wrote it about my break-up with a former partner in Paris, whom I'd lived with for four years. It was in July, and in our apartment, the mornings were always cold, regardless of the season, but that day was particularly cold. She left that morning with her things and I never saw her again. The zipping of her suitcase seemed to last forever, and it was in that very moment that the reality of our separation set in. Now, whenever I think back to that time or her, I remember the sound of that suitcase. So in a way, that suitcase never really closed,…
