This haiku was published in my collection The Smell of Rust (Katsura Press, 2003) and was a Haiku Society of America Book Award winner.”
This haiku came to me while I was deadheading marigolds on my patio.
To me, marigolds smell like rust. They are also a similar color—and my shears were a bit rusty as well.
These were the same ikebana shears I used when I studied flower arrangement in Kyoto for twelve years.
