ICHIBUTSUJITATE (single-theme haiku)

Keiko Izawa, translations, selections and commentary

Lev Hart, just along for the ride

Traditional Japanese haiku are based on two fundamental techniques: toriawase and ichibutsujitate.

In toriawase, a haiku is composed by combining a kigo and a “haiku seed” that has nothing to do with the kigo.

On the other hand, in ichibutsujitate, the haiku is written about a kigo, focusing only on it.

Just for your information, ichibutsujitate (一物仕立て) is a word combined with three meanings:

Ichi(one)  butsu(thing = kigo)  jitate(tailoring)

 一         物                        仕立て

Here are some examples of masters’ ishibutsujitate haiku:

       a bawling cry

       lingers, mournful --

       night deer                                                     Basho

       spring sea:

       rising and falling

       all day long                                                  Buson

       the daikon leaf

       flowing away:

       how fast it is!                                                 Kyoshi

The following are ichibutsujitate haiku quoted from recent posts in haikaiTALKS:

       until they are

       but specks

       departing geese

(Keith Evetts, haikaiTALKS, Sept. 14, 2024.)

a clump

of birch leaves

dimming into dusk

(Barrie Levine, haikaiTALKS, Nov. 2, 2024.)

This week’s goal is two write haiku with ichibutsujitate.

REMEMBER THE KIGO, avoid shopworn images, and strive for originality.

Thank you, Keiko.

Deep bow to you.
