MUSIC

Kanji Dev requests, “Would you do a prompt in relation to classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, etc.? They all seem to have their own signature which may inspire certain moods in haiku.”

Our first goal this week is to write a haiku in response to Arvo Pärt’s contemporary composition, “Spiegel Im Spiegel” (“A Mirror in a Mirror”). It's a short piece. You can hear it by clicking:

What emotions does the music evoke as you listen to it? Choose a seasonal image that might evoke similar feelings in the reader. Perhaps it can serve as the haiku’s fragment. Do the feelings remind you of a particular experience? Perhaps the memory can serve as the phrase for your haiku.

For this week’s second haiku, write a verse in response to the classical composition of your choice, whether Western or Eastern. Follow the same directions and suggestions as above. In the comments section, tell us the name of the piece and provide a YouTube link.

Here’s the catch: Neither haiku can be about music, or anything related to music. That would be too easy.

Keep both haiku grounded in concrete imagery, avoiding mental reflections, statements of feeling and suchlike. Avoid stock phrases and shopworn images. Strive for originality. Remember the kigo.

Re: "snow . . . snowy."

Haiku has traditionally avoided this kind of duplication, unless it achieves some specific effect. In a verse form with so few words, the idea is for each present word to contribute a new, essential detail.
